Rooftop Pavers Are Not Ground-Level Pavers. The Difference Is Everything.
Installing pavers on a rooftop requires a fundamentally different approach than ground-level paver installation. The membrane beneath the deck is the building’s waterproofing system — damaging it creates leaks that are expensive to diagnose and repair. The rooftop has a designed drainage slope that needs to remain functional. And the structural load of the installed system must stay within the rooftop’s engineered load capacity.
Pedestal deck systems address all three constraints simultaneously — which is why they are the correct technical solution for rooftop paver applications.
The membrane stays protected.
Each adjustable pedestal sits on a rubber pad that distributes load and eliminates direct contact between the paver and the membrane. Chopper Landscaping’s installation protocol treats membrane preservation as the non-negotiable baseline of every rooftop paver project.
The drainage slope stays functional.
The pedestals’ adjustable height compensates for the roof’s drainage slope below, creating a level surface above while allowing water to drain freely to the roof’s drain system beneath the floating deck.
The load stays within structural limits.
Before any rooftop installation, we assess the rooftop’s load capacity — either from building documentation or in coordination with a structural engineer — to ensure the combined weight of the pedestal system and pavers stays within the building’s structural design parameters.
How the Pedestal System Works — Technical Overview
A pedestal deck system consists of three components: the paver, the pedestal, and the base pad.
The pedestal
is an adjustable plastic support column with a threaded spindle that allows fine height adjustment. Pedestals are available in a range of height increments — from low-profile (approximately 1–2 inches of elevation) to tall (6+ inches) for applications where utility concealment requires additional deck height. The pedestal head has tabs that maintain consistent joint spacing between pavers without requiring grouted joints.
The base pad
is a rubber or recycled composite disc that sits between the pedestal base and the membrane surface. The pad distributes the pedestal's point load over a larger area and protects the membrane from abrasion.
The paver
rests on four pedestal points (or two for edge pavers) with open joints between — no mortar, no adhesive, no bonding to the membrane. Open joints allow water to pass freely through the deck surface to the drainage system below.
What's concealed underneath
The air space between the underside of the pavers and the membrane surface accommodates rooftop drainage pipes, mechanical equipment curb flashings, conduit runs, and irrigation lines — eliminating the need for above-deck utility exposure and creating a clean visual surface.
Reversibility
Any individual paver can be lifted and the pedestal adjusted or removed, providing full membrane access for inspection, drain cleaning, or future repair. No cutting, grinding, or demolition required.
Paver Selection — What Works on a Rooftop
Not every paver specification appropriate for ground-level installation is right for a rooftop pedestal application. Key selection criteria:
Format:
Large-format pavers (24″×24″, 24″×48″, 30″×30″) are the industry standard for rooftop pedestal applications. The larger format works with standard pedestal spacing, minimizes the number of joints per area, and creates the cleaner, more architectural visual field that rooftop terrace aesthetics typically call for.
Thickness:
Minimum 2-inch thick concrete pavers for pedestal applications to provide adequate flexural strength across the pedestal spans. Standard 2 3/8-inch ground pavers are also used on rooftop applications.
Weight:
Rooftop structural load calculations use the actual paver weight per square foot — larger format pavers need to be specified with weight in mind relative to the rooftop’s available load capacity.
Belgard rooftop-rated products:
Chopper Landscaping specifies Belgard large-format paver products for rooftop applications, selected from Belgard’s portfolio based on the design aesthetic, color palette, and structural requirements of each project.
Finish options:
Smooth, textured, and tumbled finishes are all available in rooftop-appropriate specifications. Textured and tumbled finishes add slip resistance, which is relevant on rooftop decks where water pooling on the paver surface is possible.
FX Luminaire Rooftop Deck Lighting
A rooftop deck without lighting is unusable after dark. With FX Luminaire LED integrated into the deck design, it becomes a designed space that works all evening.
Deck border and perimeter lights
FX Luminaire low-profile fixtures at the deck perimeter illuminate the space boundary and provide safety at the deck edge.
Planter and vertical feature uplights
Container planters, architectural screens, and vertical elements on the rooftop deck receive uplight treatment from FX Luminaire fixtures that turn structure into nighttime architecture.
In-deck step lights
At any grade transitions or raised platform areas within the deck, FX Luminaire step lights mark the change safely and create horizontal light lines that define the deck composition.
String light integration
Overhead string lighting anchored to permanent posts or wall mounts is designed and rough-in coordinated during the deck installation phase.
All rooftop lighting is specified at FX Luminaire’s 2700K warm white standard — matching the color temperature of Chopper Landscaping’s ground-level landscape lighting for visual consistency across a property.
Lighting conduit is installed beneath the pedestal deck during installation — retrofitting lighting after the deck is complete requires lifting pavers and is significantly more expensive than roughing in during initial construction.

Residential Rooftop Decks
For Utah homeowners with flat or low-slope roofs, a rooftop paver deck converts unused square footage into an outdoor living extension — a private rooftop lounge, a dining terrace with city views, or a quiet garden retreat above the urban landscape. Salt Lake City’s urban and near-urban neighborhoods have significant residential rooftop deck potential, particularly in newer construction where flat roof profiles are common.
Commercial Rooftop Terraces
Commercial rooftop terrace projects include office building amenity decks, multi-family residential amenity roofs, hotel terraces, and retail/hospitality rooftop spaces. Commercial projects are coordinated with building management, require rooftop load verification with the building’s structural team, and are subject to any rooftop equipment clearance or access requirements.
Chopper Landscaping’s commercial rooftop experience includes coordination with building owners, property managers, and structural engineers to deliver rooftop deck systems that are structurally validated, membrane-safe, and operationally compliant with building requirements.

Craftsmanship Warranty:
All workmanship covered. We don't disappear. We confirm. We deliver.
Why rooftop paver costs are higher than ground-level:
Pedestal system material cost vs. aggregate base
Rooftop logistics (material lift to upper floors, equipment limitations)
Membrane-protection protocols require additional installation time
Structural load verification coordination
Access and staging on occupied buildings (commercial projects)

Rooftop Deck Paver Questions — Answered
What is a pedestal deck system?
An adjustable-height support system that elevates pavers above the roof membrane on rubber-padded pedestals — creating a floating deck that’s level, membrane-safe, and reversible. Water drains freely below. Utilities are concealed in the air space beneath.
How do rooftop pavers protect the membrane?
Pedestal rubber base pads distribute load and eliminate direct contact with the membrane. The air layer beneath the deck insulates the membrane from UV and thermal cycling. The floating system is fully reversible for future membrane access.
Can the surface be level on a sloped roof?
Yes — adjustable pedestal height compensates for the drainage slope beneath, creating a level surface above. This is one of the system’s primary advantages.
What pavers do you use on rooftops?
Large-format Belgard pavers (24″×24″ and larger), minimum 2 inches thick, rated for pedestal applications. Format, weight, and finish are selected based on the structural load capacity and design aesthetic of each project.
Do you do commercial rooftop projects?
Yes — office amenity decks, multi-family rooftop amenities, hotel terraces. Commercial projects are coordinated with building management and structural engineers.
How much does it cost?
Depending on accessibility, pedestal height specification, paver material, and associated features. Free on-site consultation for all rooftop projects.
Is there a warranty?
Yes — craftsmanship warranty on all rooftop paver installations. Since 2018. We don’t disappear.
